Job Summary
Phlebotomist performs venipuncture and capillary puncture on adults, neonates and pediatric patients; collects urine specimens; performs EKG and spirometry on adult and pediatric patients; participates in instruction of new personnel; works with computer; communicates to promote Laboratory professionalism and a comfortable phlebotomy process. Essential duties include blood collection using vacutainer, syringe, and butterfly techniques; proper specimen labeling and handling; instructing patients on urine and stool collection procedures; data entry; preparing specimens for testing; maintaining phlebotomy stations; attending required meetings; performing EKG, Holter monitoring, and spirometry; maintaining patient confidentiality; and related tasks. Requires knowledge of laboratory techniques for blood, urine, and stool collection; understanding of specimen container volumes; accurate attachment of Holter monitors; and strong skills in patient interaction and collaboration with staff. Physical demands include full range of motion, standing, walking, bending, and color perception. Working conditions involve exposure to typical laboratory/medical environments.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED
- on the job training
- one year of phlebotomy experience
- Certification from an accredited phlebotomy diploma program preferred (optional)
- Alternative education may substitute for experience
