Job Summary
Accurately identify and obtain blood specimens from inpatients and outpatients of all ages, verify computer-generated orders, and resolve discrepancies prior to drawing. Collect body fluid specimens such as urine and cultures, ensuring specimen integrity by adhering to laboratory collection protocols and checking for IVs or fistulas. Initial, date, and record collection times on all requisition forms. Assist with retrieving blood from the tube station, central collecting specimens in the computer system, and stocking phlebotomy supplies. Monitor daily phlebotomy actions using various computer programs and logs, while maintaining the phlebotomy area and carts in a neat, clean, and well-stocked condition.
Required Qualifications
- High School graduate or equivalent
- Manual dexterity
- Ability to accurately follow directions and perform specific functions
- Ability to communicate effectively with hospitalized patients and outpatients
- Ability to communicate effectively with hospital and lab staff
- Knowledge of use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Moderate physical effort
- May be exposed to potentially infectious diseases
Desired Qualifications
- ASCP Phlebotomy Certification or equivalent
- Phlebotomy experience
