Job Summary
Greet patients, maintain flow, and collect blood specimens via venipuncture or micro-techniques while ensuring patient comfort. Prepare labels, verify demographic data, and instruct patients on non-blood collections such as urine cultures and stool samples. Assess patient conditions to determine optimal sample retrieval methods and investigate ambiguous test requests before proceeding. Process completed samples for courier drop-off, resolve issues with lost or mislabeled specimens, and perform quality assurance on equipment including centrifuges and refrigerators. Manage supply stock levels and answer phone inquiries regarding patient information. Shifts include early mornings (4a-8am), afternoons (1pm-2pm), and overnights (10pm start), with 8-hour durations. This role supports Northwestern Medicine's mission to cultivate a positive workplace through patient-first care and accurate laboratory analysis.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Phlebotomy certification through a nationally recognized organization or training from a phlebotomy school or medical institution or one or more years of phlebotomy experience in a healthcare setting or CMA certification
- Availability for early morning draws possibly 4a-8am
- Availability to pick-up afternoons, start time between 1pm and 2pm
- Availability for overnights, start time at 10pm
- 8 hour shifts
- Adherence to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program
- Compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards
- Ability to accurately collect blood specimens by venipuncture or micro techniques for laboratory analysis
- Concern and understanding of the patient and promotion of their comfort and well-being while obtaining specimens
- Ability to perform point of care testing
- Ability to collect various non-blood specimens
- Ability to perform check-in responsibilities
- Ability to greet patients
- Ability to maintain patient flow
- Ability to complete accurate voucher information
- Ability to prepare labels and verify patient demographic data
- Ability to assess the condition of patients to determine the most effective way to obtain samples
- Ability to verify test requests and investigate ambiguous information before proceeding
- Ability to prepare appropriate supplies and obtain samples
- Ability to instruct patients in the collection of various non-blood specimens (urine culture, 24-hour urines, ova/parasites and stools)
- Ability to ensure accurate voucher information, prepare completed samples for courier, and process drop-offs
- Ability to investigate lost, broken, mislabeled, incorrectly identified or otherwise unsatisfactory specimens and follow through to resolution
- Ability to verify that supplies and stock are adequate and disseminated upon delivery
- Ability to answer phone and respond appropriately to requests for information
- Ability to maintain and perform quality assurance on equipment (centrifuge, refrigerator, incubator)
- Completion of background check authorization and disclosure form
Desired Qualifications
- Experience performing phlebotomy on a broad range of patient's types
- Experience with processing lab specimens, transferring specimens, and handling a centrifuge
- Familiarity with medical EMR systems
- Knowledge of medical terminology
