Job Summary

Collect venous blood specimens from diverse patient populations across multiple settings including hospitals, nursing homes, physician offices, and patient homes. Perform venipunctures while maintaining strict infection control protocols and safely disposing of contaminated materials. Organize workload efficiently, complete routine blood tests within 5-8 minutes, and accurately label specimens for LIS entry. Drive company vehicles to facilities, adhere to traffic laws, and manage vehicle maintenance. Monitor test orders, audit requisitions for demographic and code accuracy, and assist clients with data entry and collection protocol training. Perform phlebotomy duties after hours, weekends, and holidays as needed. Maintain URL collection logs and handle information requests on specimen results.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of four months experience which may be obtained through any of the following: High School and/or Vocational School; and/or Technical School; and/or essential experience; and/or On-The-Job training
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Must have current class "C" driver's license (State of Texas) and be capable of driving a manual transmission vehicle
  • Must remain insurable under liability insurance policy, i.e. over age 21 and no moving violations
  • Possess the manual dexterity to safely operate a motor vehicle
  • Common reasoning, basic mathematical skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of all units of measure, and with like common and decimal fractions, and with the ability to compute percentages
  • Ability to read reports, notes, etc.
  • Ability to write reports and procedures using proper grammar, spelling, etc.
  • Ability to speak with poise and control using correct English
  • Requires standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 35 pounds, and driving during the entire shift
  • Requires manual hand and finger dexterity, visual acuity and color vision, and eye-hand coordination
  • Must be able to handle all types of biological and physical specimens using proper blood and body fluid precautions
  • Must be able to perform veni-punctures on all patient populations
  • Must be able to organize workload efficiently and without delay
  • Must practice safety and infection control procedures according to laboratory and hospital policies
  • Must be able to perform all duties associated with LIS in an accurate and timely manner
  • Must be able to perform basic laboratory tests at patient's bedside
  • Must be able to process paperwork and specimens for send out reference lab testing and drug screens
  • Must demonstrate competency in assessing patients' needs at bedside
  • Must be able to identify patients and label specimens accurately according to established procedures
  • Must consistently collect the proper specimens for tests to be performed
  • Must be able to write date, time, and initials on labels and requisitions
  • Must consistently complete routine blood sample tests within 5-8 minutes, difficult cases within 15 minutes
  • Must maintain URL collection logs at assigned facilities
  • Must interact and collect specimens in multiple settings e.g. URPG offices, hospitals, nursing homes, businesses, physician offices, schools, and patient homes
  • Must perform driving duties, obey traffic laws, and maintain the care and fueling of company vehicles
  • Must be able to perform audits of requisitions, monitor test orders at facilities, and insure accuracy of patient demographics, insurances, and ICD-10 codes for entering into the LIS
  • Must be able to assist clients with training in the LIS and familiarization with data entry protocols
  • Must be able to assist clients with training in specimen collection protocols and laboratory regulations on specimen labeling, time critical tests, specimen temperature, and specimen transport requirements
  • Must practice safety and infection control protocol according to lab and hospital policies
  • Must be able to handle contaminated materials according to infection control guidelines
  • Must be able to report accidents, incidents, and/or unsafe conditions to supervisor
  • Must be able to complete incident report within 24 hours
  • Must be able to dispose of contaminated needles in a puncture proof container
  • Must never recap or cut needles
  • Must be able to sort chart reports for mail as needed
  • Must be able to handle information requests on specimen/test results
  • Must be able to assist with daily functions of secretary, courier, maintaining supplies, training new employees, and other needs
  • Must be able to perform phlebotomy duty after normal business hours and overnight, weekends, and holidays

Desired Qualifications

  • Phlebotomy certification preferred or a minimum of 1year work experience
