Job Summary
Phlebotomist collects and transports specimens for testing, processes specimens, packs specimens for transportation, specimen tracking, and related clerical duties under supervision of the laboratory manager. Must work in a hospital laboratory environment with exposure to potential biohazards and infectious materials; duties include arterial and venous blood collections (including pediatric and elderly patients), clerical duties for reporting and billing/coding logs, delivering specimens as needed, and providing administrative support. The role requires strong communication, teamwork, and adherence to HIPAA; learners may receive training and may rotate holidays and hours as needed. Education prerequisite is a High School Diploma or GED, with phlebotomy classes and 1 year of experience or 18 months preferred but not required; phlebotomy certification is preferred but not required.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalence
- Phlebotomy classes and 1 year of experience or 18 months of experience as a phlebotomist preferred but not required
- Eligible for phlebotomy certification preferred but not required
- Knowledge of medical terminology and clinical laboratory procedures
- Ability to maintain confidentiality per HIPAA
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients and staff
- Ability to work under stress and in a hospital environment
- Willingness to rotate holidays and shifts as needed
- Experience with laboratory documentation and record-keeping
- Ability to train less experienced staff and provide guidance
- Laboratory safety and handling of biologic specimens
- Basic computer skills for specimen tracking and reporting
