Job Summary

Draw blood samples and handle other specimens for laboratory analysis as ordered by attending physicians in the Adult Emergency Department. Ensure properly identified and labeled specimens while performing routine procedures, administering glucose tolerance tests, and registering patients. Enter patient demographic data, insurance information, and test orders into the laboratory computer database. Prepare specimens for transport including pouring off urines and centrifugation of blood samples, then ensure prompt delivery to the laboratory. Maintain accurate records, comply with safety policies and PPE usage, and complete annual competency assessments. Work Wed-Sun 1530-0000.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Completion of a Phlebotomy training course, medical training course or on the job training
  • 1-3 years of experience
  • Current Basic Life Support from AHA (American Heart Association) certification
  • Current phlebotomy certification (must have issue date and expiration date on certificate): Phlebotomy Technician (PBT)- American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC), Phlebotomy Certification (PC) – National Healthcare Certification Organization (NHCO) or Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT)- National Performance Specialists (NPS)
  • Knowledge of phlebotomy policies, procedures, techniques and processing requirements
  • Excellent verbal and written communications, in accordance to PAACT agreement
  • Demonstration of the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served by his or her service, including all types of phlebotomy procedures
  • Knowledge and adherence to policy regarding HIPAA and privacy of confidential information
  • Core level knowledge of normal laboratory testing processes and specimen requirements
  • Ability and skill to apply core level theory, practices and techniques to perform, post-process, analyze and annotate data or procedure documentation
  • Ability to prioritize and complete clinical or non-clinical work assignments
  • Wed-Sun 1530-0000 shift availability
  • Emergency Dept location
