PhD Student / Vibrotactile feedback to support complex tasks in space exploration
On-site · Dresden, Saxony, Germany or Köln, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany
Job Summary
PhD candidate sought to develop and validate a vibrotactile feedback system to support astronauts during missions in microgravity or on the Moon. Within an interdisciplinary network spanning human factors, haptics, robotics and space technology, tasks include analysing multimodal physiological and behavioural data from parabolic flights (eye-tracking, ECG, EEG) to understand performance impairments, contributing to conceptual development of adaptive vibrotactile feedback strategies, and conducting experiments under simulated space conditions (simulations, analogue studies, VR environments). Collaboration with national/international partners (e.g., TU Dresden, ESA) and dissemination through scientific conferences and peer‐reviewed publications are expected. Essential qualifications include a Master’s/Diplom in psychology or related fields, experience with physiological data analysis, statistics, and English proficiency; desirable skills include VR, programming (Python, MATLAB, C++), haptic systems, and interest in space research. The role involves research stays at DLR Oberpfaffenhofen and publication of results in international journals.
Required Qualifications
- A completed university degree (Master’s or Diplom) in Psychology (preferably cognitive or experimental psychology), Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, or comparable degrees
- Knowledge of the analysis of physiological and behavioural data (e.g. ECG, eye-tracking)
- Experience with statistics and statistical data analysis (e.g. in R, SPSS)
- Interest in experimental research, particularly in cognitive or sensorimotor tasks
- Very good written and spoken English
- High level of motivation and initiative, structured approach to work and ability to work in a team
