Job Summary

PhD scholarship investigating mitochondrial transplantation as a potential therapeutic for traumatic brain injury, based primarily at Brisbane South (Nathan) with potential cross-site work at Griffith locations. Supervisors include Dr Mariyam Murtaza, Dr Ronak Reshamwala, and Professor James St John. The NIISQ scholarship offers an annual stipend of $50,000 for up to three years of full-time study. Expressions of interest are welcome from domestic and international applicants who can obtain a student visa for study in Australia, with commence date in 2027. The project focuses on isolating and characterising mitochondria from neural cells, exploring uptake differences by neurons and glia, and developing biomaterial-based delivery to TBI models to advance toward clinical translation. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in neuroscience and cell biology, an innovative entrepreneurial mindset, and the ability to work autonomously and collaboratively within a large team.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with honours (2A) or a Master's degree incorporating a significant research component
  • strong scientific background in neuroscience and cell biology
  • ability to commence in 2027
