PhD Position: Shaping a Just and Inclusive Urban Mobility Transition

Job Summary
PhD position at TU Delft focusing on shaping an inclusive, just sustainable mobility transition. The project aims to interpret and operationalise concepts of spatial accessibility and mobility justice to support sustainable mobility transitions, with a mix of academic rigor and practical engagement for planners, designers, and policymakers. Potential directions include inclusive active and shared mobility solutions, stakeholder and citizen perspectives on justice in mobility transitions, interactions between mobility, spatial planning, and housing policy, and equity implications of accessibility-oriented planning like the 15-minute city. The research will adopt mixed-methods and participatory case-study approaches, involving fieldwork and stakeholder engagement in one or more locations in the Netherlands, with requirements for proficiency in Dutch and English and the possibility of relocation to the Netherlands. The role includes enrollment in the TU Delft Graduate School and offers a 4-year contract distributed over two employment periods, with relocation support and a dual-career program. The successful candidate will join the Urban Studies section of the Department of Urbanism and collaborate across disciplines to study how urban design affects behaviour and mobility outcomes.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in spatial planning, urban planning, urban studies, transport studies, human geography, or related discipline
- Strong interest in contributing to a sustainable mobility transition from a social and spatial justice perspective
- Experience with or interest in mixed-methods research, participatory research, community engagement, and/or stakeholder engagement
- Ability to work independently, proactively, and creatively
- Very good presentation, writing, and communication skills
- Excellent command of written and spoken English; TOEFL iBT or IELTS score where applicable (TU Delft admission requirements)
- Proficiency in spoken and written Dutch sufficient for participatory research in the Dutch context (CEFR B2 level or higher)
- Availability to start during 2026
