PhD Position Projection System for TE Imaging in Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)

Job Summary
PhD candidate position at TU Delft to develop and validate a MEMS-based transmission electron projection column integrated inside an SEM, enabling high-resolution transmission imaging alongside complementary modalities. You will perform analytical and numerical modelling of electron optics, develop Python-based modelling tools, and work with commercial electron-optical software. The project spans design, fabrication using MEMS technology and/or precision machining, and experimental validation in a lab with state-of-the-art microfabrication and vacuum instrumentation. Collaborating with TU Delft researchers and Delmic, you will publish findings in journals and present at conferences, contributing to supervision of BSc and MSc students. The role combines theoretical modelling, hardware development, and experimental work across phases of model creation, design realization, and prototype validation, within the Microscopy Instrumentation and Techniques group at the Faculty of Applied Sciences.
Required Qualifications
- An MSc degree in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering or a closely related field
- Demonstrable skills in numerical modeling, simulation, and data analysis
- A solid understanding of Physics, Optics, Electron Optics, MEMS, experimental physics and microscopy systems
- A proactive and curious mindset, with the ability to explore complex problems independently and collaboratively
- A good command of spoken and written English, you’ll be working in an internationally diverse community
- An enthusiasm for coaching bachelor and master students, and for presenting your work in scientific articles and international conferences
