Job Summary

Provide information and guidance to the general public regarding application procedures for all types of building permits. Review permit applications for required documentation, distribute them for necessary reviews, and monitor their progress. Verify completion of all reviews, notify applicants of approved permits, and serve as a liaison between reviewing agencies and the applicant. Maintain building permit packets with detailed official records, address public records requests, and answer phones or assist customers at the counter. Handle customer questions regarding permit requirements and refer technical issues to appropriate staff. Perform specialized processing functions, use scanners for image documents, and maintain confidentiality of records. Commute to other office locations based on operational needs.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED
  • Three (3) years of general clerical experience
  • Minimum of two (2) years in strong customer service
  • A comparable amount of education, training, or experience with related job skills may be substituted for the minimum requirements
  • Knowledge of basic land development and construction permit requirements
  • Knowledge of general permit processing and procedures
  • Knowledge of County offices and functions
  • Knowledge of land development and construction terminology
  • Able to deal with the public in a professional, courteous manner
  • Able to accurately answer questions and resolve problem situations or refer to appropriate office
  • Able to follow check lists and recognize different types of required exhibits and plans
  • Hands-on experience with desktop computer applications
  • Skilled in the use of various office equipment
  • Able to work under stressful conditions
  • Able to interact effectively with others
  • Must be able to commute to other office locations base upon operational needs
  • Able to move about an office
  • Able to lift and carry up to 10 pounds
  • Able to look at a computer screen for long periods and operate computer keyboard, and other office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement
  • Able to speak, hear, and see
  • Finger dexterity
  • Visual Acuity (peripheral vision, depth perception) to operate motorized vehicles
  • Able to perform shop math including fractions, percentages, ratios, multiplication, subtraction, division
  • Able to read and comprehend instructions, reports, permits, applications
  • Able to speak clearly and concisely
  • Able to write detailed information and data in clear and proper English
  • Attends work on a regular and consistent basis

Desired Qualifications

  • The preferred candidate will have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in construction, building, or permitting
  • Experience working with permitting type software is a plus
