Job Summary
Provide information and guidance to the public regarding application procedures for all types of building permits, including reviewing required documentation and assisting with forms. Monitor the progress of permit reviews, serve as a liaison between reviewing agencies and applicants, and notify customers of approval status. Distribute applications for necessary reviews, maintain detailed permit packets, and address public records requests. Answer phones, handle counter inquiries, and resolve customer issues regarding permit requirements while referring technical questions to appropriate staff. Perform specialized processing functions, operate scanners for image documents, and track permits through the inspection process to advise customers of status and final approval.
Required Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or possession of a GED
- Three (3) years of general clerical experience
- Minimum of two (2) years in strong customer service
- A comparable amount of education, training, or experience with related job skills
- Knowledge of basic land development and construction permit requirements
- Knowledge of general permit processing and procedures
- Knowledge of County offices and functions
- Knowledge of land development and construction terminology
- Able to deal with the public in a professional, courteous manner
- Able to accurately answer questions and resolve problem situations or refer to appropriate office
- Able to follow check lists and recognize different types of required exhibits and plans
- Hands-on experience with desktop computer applications
- Skilled in the use of various office equipment
- Able to work under stressful conditions
- Able to interact effectively with others
- Must be able to commute to other office locations based upon operational needs
- Able to perform shop math including fractions, percentages, ratios, multiplication, subtraction, division
- Able to read and comprehend instructions, reports, permits, applications
- Able to speak clearly and concisely
- Able to write detailed information and data in clear and proper English
- Able to lift and carry up to 10 pounds
- Able to look at a computer screen for long periods and operate computer keyboard, and other office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement
- Able to speak, hear, and see
- Finger dexterity
- Visual Acuity (peripheral vision, depth perception) to operate motorized vehicles
- Attends work on a regular and consistent basis
Desired Qualifications
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in construction, building, or permitting
- Experience working with permitting type software
