Job Summary

Assist the registered nurse with direct and indirect patient care in the perioperative area, including patient positioning, prep, lifting, turning, and repositioning. Transport patients and equipment, obtain vital signs, EKGs, and urine pregnancy tests, and deliver specimens to appropriate locations. Manage highly-technical service-specific equipment, maintain oxygen cylinders, and perform unit secretary duties such as telephone messages. Assist with room turnovers, hazardous material disposal, and restocking supplies in pre and post-operative areas. Monitor and maintain aseptic technique, infection control, and patient safety protocols while acting as a liaison with the Biomedical Department.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Must meet all of the job requirements at the time of submitting the application
  • Must provide all employment history, education, and licenses/certifications/registrations
  • Must be able to lift and carry more than 100 pounds
  • Must be able to perform frequent bending, climbing, crawling, crouching/stooping, kneeling, pushing/pulling, reaching, twisting, and walking
  • Must be able to perform frequent standing and occasional sitting
  • Must be able to work in an environment with high noise levels, exposure to heat and cold, potentially dangerous equipment, biohazardous conditions, risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals
  • Must be able to travel to offsite locations
  • Must be able to work subject to significant volume changes of seasonal/clinical nature
  • Must be able to perform duties with precise measures of quantity and quality
  • Must be able to work rotating shifts
  • Must be able to work full time
  • Must be able to work as non-exempt (FLSA Designation/Job Exempt: No)
  • Must be able to work hourly
  • Must be able to work 100% FTE
  • Must be able to work in Jackson, Mississippi (Main Campus)

Desired Qualifications

  • One (1) year experience in a healthcare related occupation
  • Completion of first semester of RN/LPN program
  • Certification program (such as the Certified Surgical Tech Cleaner)
  • 6 months of experience
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills across departments
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the principles of Perioperative practice (aseptic technique, infection control, traffic patterns, patient safety)
  • Demonstrates an understanding of appropriate specimen handling, including, but not limited to packaging, preservatives, tracking and regulatory compliance
  • Demonstrates an understanding of operational function, safety, cleaning, maintenance of highly-technical service-specific equipment (microscopes, lasers, video equipment)
  • Demonstrates an understanding of National Patient Safety Goals (specifically related to patient identification)
  • Ability to obtain vital signs, EKG's, Urine Pregnancy Test, Accu-checks and other duties as assigned
  • Ability to monitor and maintain oxygen cylinders
  • Ability to act as a liaison with hospital Biomedical Department
  • Ability to handle hazardous material disposal
  • Ability to package, preserve, track and deliver specimens, cultures and/or labs to appropriate locations within acceptable time frames
  • Ability to assist the RN in the care of the patient (lifting, turning and repositioning the patient, utilizing proper body mechanics and equipment)
  • Ability to assist the RN in the care of the patient (obtaining vital signs, EKG's, Urine Pregnancy Test, Accu-checks and other duties as assigned)
  • Ability to assemble, clean and prepare and/or move equipment as directed
  • Ability to perform unit secretary duties, including telephone duties, appropriate message taking, and related tasks
  • Ability to stock, clean and maintain supplies in the pre and post-operative areas
  • Ability to perform room turnovers (cleaning and hazardous material disposal)
  • Ability to transport patients
  • Ability to perform patient positioning and patient prep
  • Ability to perform indirect patient care in the perioperative area under the guidance and direction of the registered nurse
  • Ability to perform job duties in accordance with the medical center's purpose
  • Ability to work in accordance with UMMC policy and nursing practice laws and regulations
