Job Summary
Collect blood specimens via venipuncture, skin puncture, and heel sticks while verifying patient identity and test requisitions. Assemble collection equipment, process non-blood samples including urine and sputum, and accessions specimens for laboratory testing. Perform waived or moderately complex testing, run quality control reports, and maintain daily tallies of collections. Greet patients, answer general inquiries, and perform clerical duties such as recording volumes and filing. Adhere to all laboratory policies, PPE requirements, and safety procedures for biohazards. Assist in training interns and new employees as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma/GED
- Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) certification or has experience completed at least 100 venipunctures
- Access to reliable transportation
- Valid US driver's license
- Must be able to work a Per Diem schedule with no set number of hours
- Must be available for flexible shifts including weekdays or weekends
- Must be available for 'as needed' basis work
- Must be willing to cover other sites if needed
- Must be able to collect blood specimens utilizing venipuncture, skin puncture finger sticks and heel sticks
- Must be able to collect non-blood specimens such as urine, sputum and throat swab/throat cultures
- Must be able to check test requisition or computer label to assure correctness and completeness
- Must be able to assemble equipment such as tourniquet, needles, disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol
- Must be able to verify or record identity of patient and converse with patient
- Must be able to apply tourniquet to arm, locate accessible vein, swab puncture area with antiseptic, and insert needle into vein to draw blood
- Must be able to initial, date, and time all collections and maintain daily tallies
- Must be able to access and process specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing
- Must be able to record requests for blood collections and answer general questions concerning test orders
- Must be able to perform waived or moderately complex testing utilizing a test kit or lab instrument
- Must be able to perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration of the device
- Must have knowledge of reagent stability and storage
- Must be able to follow quality control procedures
- Must be able to perform Proficiency Testing
- Must be able to run the quality control report before reporting in order to provide valid patient test results
- Must be able to contribute to general laboratory functions and attend regular department staff meetings and in-service training
- Must be able to keep work area neat and clean and restock daily supplies
- Must be able to perform receptionist duties including greeting patient, reviewing laboratory request sheets, informing patient of additional instructions, and responding to questions
- Must be able to perform various computer functions as needed related to processing of specimens
- Must be able to perform clerical duties including recording of daily specimen volumes, maintaining supplies of patient questionnaires, and filing
- Must be able to assist in training student interns and new employees
- Must be able to assist in various clinical areas with specimen processing and testing procedures
- Must adhere to all laboratory policies and procedures and review policy and procedures on an annual basis
- Must ensure excellent communication, collaboration and cooperation with coworkers, medical staff and supervisors
- Must adhere to all PPE while handling biohazards especially the use of gloves and handwashing
- Must utilize safety devices for sharp in accordance with established procedures
- Must be able to pass a drug test before beginning employment
Desired Qualifications
- Graduate from a Phlebotomy technical training program
- CPR Certification
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Knowledge of medical terminology obtained through previous medical practice experience (up to 1 year)
- Proficiency in the use of Lab Information Systems (LIS) and Electronic Medical Records (EMR)
- Proven ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Proven solid interpersonal skills and customer service orientation
