Peer Support Worker

Job Summary

Provide non-clinical, peer-based services within an interdisciplinary care team using a trauma-informed, culturally safe approach. Deliver individual peer support, facilitate recovery groups, and conduct information sessions by sharing lived experience to assist patients and clients through their health care journey. Promote empowerment and independence through motivational self-disclosure, emotional support, and relationship building while helping individuals explore skill building and community integration. This work aligns with VCH's pillars of Indigenous Cultural Safety, Anti-Racism, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. Required Qualifications

  • Certificate in a Social Services program
  • Successful completion of a recognized Peer Support Training program
  • Two (2) years recent related experience in a peer support role
  • Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Lived experience with recovery from addiction and/or mental illness
  • Experience as a recipient of mental health and addiction services
  • Peer knowledge of the designated service user population in the applicable program area or department
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive and respectful relationships with co-workers and the multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to deal with others effectively
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
  • Ability to organize work
  • Ability to operate related equipment
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Records Review Check
