Job Summary

Facilitate engagement by forging strong connections with participants and families in Harlem, the Bronx, and surrounding communities while promoting community awareness of S:US services. Distribute Naloxone kits to individuals and their family members to combat overdose. Develop authentic relationships through empathy, listening, and collaboration, and advocate for program participants both within the team and in the larger community. Co-create support and wellness toolkits with participants to strengthen self-awareness and connect them to external resources. Maintain open communication with the team by reporting safety concerns and documenting visits, co-collaborating on reports where appropriate. Travel 75% of the time to engage clients at shelters and in various community settings.

Required Qualifications

  • Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (or Provisional) Certification
  • Understanding of the community in which the team is based with an awareness of available community resources
  • Positive and productive progress toward his or her own recovery
  • Good interpersonal communications skills and the ability to empathize with, relate to and effectively work with participants of mental health services
  • Two years of active participation in substance use/mental health self-help activities, peer support or peer advocacy programs, or participant run organizations or similar experiences or programs
  • Ability/willingness to disclose their recovery story (where appropriate) for the purposes of empowerment
  • Good judgment/ability to understand boundaries when working with participants of substance use/mental health services
  • Ability to adhere to on call cell phone system to facilitate crisis intervention, emergencies and other situations that require immediate action
  • Significant travel to engage clients at shelters, in their community and other settings (75%)
