Job Summary
Peer Specialist at the Recovery Center East provides strength-based, recovery-oriented support to individuals affected by mental health challenges, with responsibilities including individual coaching, facilitating peer support groups and activities, creating and coordinating events, maintaining a safe environment, building connections with local mental health agencies, and communicating via flyers and webpage updates. Requires lived experience with mental health services, a high school diploma or GED (with NY Peer Specialist Certification pursued), one year direct-service experience, strong listening and interpersonal skills, basic computer proficiency, and a valid NY driver’s license for client transportation. Evening and Saturday availability are required; position is part-time with nonexempt status.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum one year experience in direct services with persons with psychiatric diagnosis or trauma survivors
- Ability to connect with others through lived experience
- Willingness to pursue New York Peer Specialist Certification
- Clean NY State Driver’s License
- Comfortable driving an agency van for client transportation
- Bi-lingual English/Spanish a plus
- Basic knowledge of computer applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, Social Media)
- Availability for trainings/workshops
- Calm, patient, empathetic, supportive demeanor
- Ability to engage diverse groups
- Ability to maintain required documentation
