Payroll Specialist I - 226 Days (2026-2027)

Job Summary

Receive and audit time sheets, calculate wages, overtime, and withholdings, and prepare paychecks while maintaining accurate payroll history. Compile data for state and local reports, process payroll changes including terminations and salary updates, and handle routine inquiries to ensure high-level service for employees and supervisors. Maintain inventories of office supplies, prepare items for board meetings, and manage Public Information Act requests under moderate supervision. Comply with all legal requirements, professional ethics, and safety protocols while supporting the District's mission to advance student achievement.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Three (3) years successful related work experience
  • Proficient skills in keyboarding, data entry, word processing, and file maintenance
  • Ability to use software to develop spreadsheets and databases and do word processing
  • Ability to prioritize workflow to address the multiple needs of the supervisor or the department
  • Ability to multi-task numerous complex administrative activities
  • Basic math skills
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of school district organization, operations, and administrative policies
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos
  • Excellent public relations, organization, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Occasional light to moderate lifting and carrying (less than 44 pounds)
  • Work to be completed on-site from assigned school or building
  • No remote work
  • Occasional districtwide travel
  • Comply with all policies, operating procedures, legal requirements, and verbal and written directives
  • Comply with the Professional Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators
  • Follow District safety protocols and emergency procedures
  • Maintain emotional control under stress
  • Prolonged or irregular hours

Desired Qualifications

  • Associate Degree (preferred)
  • Experience in public education payroll environment (preferred)
