Payroll & Retirement Benefits Manager

Job Summary

Oversee end-to-end multi-state payroll processing for hourly, salaried, and contract employees while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations including FLSA and tax requirements. Manage retirement benefits administration for ESOP, 401(k), and 1165(e) plans, coordinate health and welfare benefits, and prepare annual census data and Form 5500 filings. Supervise a Payroll Specialist through ongoing feedback and annual reviews to drive process standardization and automation initiatives across UKG, IFS, and third-party carrier systems. Support monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes by preparing payroll-related journal entries and reconciling balance sheet accounts. Lead remediation efforts for audit findings and maintain comprehensive documentation to ensure audit readiness for all payroll and benefits transactions.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field
  • 5-7+ years of payroll and benefits experience including multi-state payroll environments
  • Strong working knowledge of payroll regulations, tax compliance, and benefits laws (ERISA, ACA, COBRA)
  • Experience with payroll and HRIS systems (UKG, ADP, IFS, or similar platforms)
  • Advanced Excel skills (data reconciliation, pivot tables, audit schedules, and reporting)
  • Demonstrated experience supporting payroll and/or benefits audits
  • Experience administering retirement plans (ESOP, 401(k), or similar)
  • Experience in multi-entity or complex organizational structures

Desired Qualifications

  • UKG experience strongly preferred
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation strongly preferred
