Payroll & People Systems Specialist

Job Summary
Run end-to-end bi-weekly and semi-monthly payroll for US and Canadian employees; administer benefits enrollments, changes, and terminations across payroll systems and external carriers; support RRSP and 401(k) administration, deductions, and reconciliations; prepare payroll reports and lead month-end/year-end processes (T4/W-2); respond to payroll and benefits inquiries while ensuring ongoing legislative compliance; administer leaves of absence and coordinate with benefits carriers; support onboarding, offboarding, and lifecycle processes from a systems perspective; design and implement improvements to reduce manual effort, improve accuracy, and build scalable infrastructure via automation and AI-enabled tools; stay informed on payroll technology and workflow automation and expand the systems lens to other people operations processes.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience administering payroll and benefits in both Canada and the US
- Strong understanding of payroll systems, payroll taxation, and employment regulations
- A systems thinking mindset and curiosity about improving how work gets done
- Experience supporting broader HR or people operations is a strong asset
- Exceptional attention to detail, confidentiality, and follow-through
- Strong Excel skills and the ability to work confidently with payroll and benefits data
- Comfort with technology and interest in automation and AI-enabled solutions
Desired Qualifications
- PCP or CPP certification (or in progress)
- Hands-on experience with payroll or HRIS system implementations
- Experience supporting broader HR or people operations is a strong asset
- Lean or evolving organization experience where the job description was a starting point, not a ceiling
- Strong Excel skills and the ability to work confidently with payroll and benefits data
- Comfort with technology and interest in automation and AI-enabled solutions
