Job Summary
Answer incoming phones, process patient check-ins and out, and coordinate appointments through electronic and manual systems. Verify demographic and insurance information, obtain referrals and prior authorizations, and collect co-pays or upfront payments. Generate charge documents, submit billing paperwork, and reconcile daily cash collections. Serve as a liaison with physicians, providers, and insurance companies while maintaining accurate medical records and filing systems. Work full-time at the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, providing direct administrative support for the Patient Services Department.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Ability to verify demographic and insurance information
- Ability to obtain referral and prior authorizations with insurance carriers
- Ability to serve as a liaison with physicians, other providers and insurance companies
- Ability to process new patient referrals
- Ability to verify insurance coverage and benefits
- Ability to act as a frontline registrar for Medical or Radiation Oncology
- Ability to perform appointment scheduling
- Ability to manage medical records
- Ability to act as a PBX Operator
- Ability to answer incoming phones
- Ability to perform patient check in/out
- Ability to coordinate and facilitate accurate patient appointment scheduling through electronic and/or manual systems
- Ability to schedule follow-up appointments as ordered by providers
- Ability to update and ensure accurate patient schedules and appointments in UNMMG computer systems
- Ability to obtain copy of insurance card
- Ability to verify accuracy of patient demographics and insurance information
- Ability to update and ensure accurate information into UNMMG computer systems
- Ability to collect co-pays
- Ability to collect upfront payments as well as self-pay down payments
- Ability to generate patient receipts
- Ability to refer patients to financial counseling for funding options
- Ability to perform daily cash reconciliation of cash collections and receipts
- Ability to follow UNMMG established cash management policies and procedures
- Ability to generate charge document and other billing paperwork at time of patient clinic visit
- Ability to ensure proper billing information is obtained and documented
- Ability to complete paperwork by provider
- Ability to provide written documentation on clinic log
- Ability to select DX and CPT code by provider on charge document
- Ability to submit to UNMMG centralized charge entry
- Ability to coordinate and process all referrals and prior authorizations
- Ability to interface with insurance companies to verify coverage and obtain prior authorizations
- Ability to coordinate multiple authorizations and coverage
- Ability to compile medical documentation necessary to ensure prior authorization is obtained
- Ability to update computer systems to ensure final prior authorization is documented in UNMMG computer systems
- Ability to maintain ongoing communications and dialog with the centralized UNMMG Practice Coordinator
- Ability to address staffing issues, ongoing training and support
- Ability to address problems or issues related to clinic front-end processes and operations
- Ability to maintain record keeping and filing systems
- Ability to gather, enter and update data as required
- Ability to serve as backup support for other administrative personnel
- Ability to cross train with other personnel for all administrative, customer service and clerical functions
- Ability to work in the UNM Medical Group, Inc Cancer Center Medical Records Area
- Ability to work at the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC)
- Ability to work 1.0 FTE (full time equivalent) or 40 hours per week
