Job Summary
Conduct thorough patient registration, including insurance verification for laboratory, diagnostic imaging, and emergency room visits. Complete pre-registration calls, maintain patient schedules, and obtain necessary consent forms and witness signatures. Operate the hospital switchboard to answer incoming calls, transfer patients, and utilize the paging system. Process payments, collect co-pays, balance cash, and deposit receipts daily. Welcome visitors, provide directional assistance, and facilitate optimal patient flow across departments. Maintain accurate medical records, verify superbills, and coordinate with other departments to ensure seamless care experiences.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent

- Ability to complete thorough and accurate registration of patients including insurance verification
- Ability to complete pre-registration and insurance verification over the phone
- Ability to maintain patient schedule
- Ability to schedule or reschedule appointments within established guidelines
- Ability to conduct patient rounds in patient care areas
- Ability to act as a liaison with other departments and facilities
- Ability to obtain all necessary releases including consent to treat, conditions of admission, and confidential release
- Ability to obtain witness signatures as needed
- Ability to provide self-pay patients with application for charity care
- Ability to refer MVA accounts to the Financial Advocate
- Ability to refer to the Insurance Verifier when unable to obtain insurance verification via online portals
- Ability to collect and return patient valuables per department procedure
- Ability to collect co-pays and deductibles from patients
- Ability to operate the main hospital switchboard effectively and efficiently
- Ability to answer all in-coming calls promptly, professionally and courteously
- Ability to transfer calls to appropriate destination
- Ability to utilize overhead paging system appropriately
- Ability to welcome all patients and visitors to the organization

- Ability to set up appointments for patients or community members to meet with the SHIBA representative
- Ability to prepare remit folders for current usage and outdated folders for storage
- Ability to balance cash on hand at beginning and end of shift

- Ability to ensure adequate stock of supplies for designated work areas
- Ability to order stock and non-stock items using appropriate systems or forms
- Ability to obtain all demographic and insurance information from patients
- Ability to register in the Electronic Medical Record system
- Ability to verify insurance eligibility
- Ability to ensure insurance authorization is obtained
- Ability to obtain income verification for self-pay patients eligible for sliding-fee scale
- Ability to collect co-payments at time of registration
- Ability to check superbill for completion and accuracy
- Ability to determine visit charges from superbill
- Ability to perform charge entry via the Electronic Medical Record system
- Ability to coordinate with Patient Access and other hospital departments
- Ability to provide back up support to the PFS Representative
- Ability to provide support to the maintenance of medical records
- Ability to ensure all required release forms are signed upon registration
- Ability to copy records or other department-specific protected health information documents within established release of information policies and procedures
- Ability to provide a comprehensive hand off of all pertinent information to the oncoming shift
- Ability to answer all incoming calls to the facility in the evening, night time and weekend hours
Desired Qualifications
- Advanced education
- One (1) year of previous medical office experience
- Prior experience using an electronic health record
- Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHM) certification
- Certified Revenue Cycle Specialist (CRCS) certification
