Job Summary
Counsel patients regarding collection balances, delinquent balances, copayments, and surgical or maternity coinsurance prepayment requirements. Establish payment arrangements for balances, contact clinical departments for direction on patients without payment, and review demographic and insurance information. Greet patients, verify identity and protected health information, and provide appropriate forms while obtaining required signatures. Contact providers to determine minimum financial expectations and calculate estimated insurance payments. Collect and post time of service and account payments, enter account alerts, and maintain daily cash drawer balances. Enter account notes to record encounters, participate in daily department huddles, and provide support or coverage to the Central Check In team as required.
Required Qualifications
- High School education or equivalent
- Customer service experience
- Demonstrated leadership experience
- Professionalism with staff, patients, physicians, and other outside contacts
- Full-time employment
- Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm schedule
- No night shifts
- No weekend shifts
- Face to face counseling capability
- Ability to establish payment arrangements
- Ability to contact clinical departments or providers
- Ability to review and update demographic and insurance information
- Ability to collect and post time of service and account payments
- Ability to assist patients with billing and insurance related questions
- Ability to verify patient identity (name, DOB, account number)
- Ability to obtain required signatures
- Ability to contact providers/departments to determine minimum financial expectations
- Ability to counsel patients regarding account balances and insurance concerns
- Ability to counsel patients regarding financial responsibility for prenatal, infertility, procedure, surgical, and non-covered services
- Ability to contact insurance carrier for insurance benefits
- Ability to calculate estimated insurance payment and patient responsibility
- Ability to collect payment or establish payment arrangements with patient
- Ability to enter account alerts for amounts to be collected
- Ability to enter account alerts for pre-collection amounts due
- Ability to enter account alerts for insurance information needed
- Ability to enter account alerts for patients requiring financial counseling
- Ability to maintain work area and waiting area in neat and orderly manner
- Ability to provide support and coverage to check in
- Ability to attend meetings as required
- Ability to receive cross training and provide back up/coverage
- Ability to work in an office environment
- Ability to work in a demanding and fast-paced environment
- Ability to interact with angry or confrontational people
- Ability to deal with sick people
- Ability to work in an environment which can be very stressful
- Ability to view and type on computer screens for long periods
- Ability to work with files and supplies
- Ability to lift files or paper weighing up to 50 pounds
- Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, type at 40 wpm, operate a telephone, copier, and such other office equipment as necessary
- Vision correctable to 20/20
- Hearing in the normal range for telephone contacts
Desired Qualifications

- Experience in a medical office, insurance position, or equivalent
