Job Summary
The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) works under the direction of the registered nurse as a non-licensed team member to provide care to designated patients and support the patient care team. Responsibilities include activities of daily living, mobility assistance, continuous observation including suicide prevention, and keeping the patient’s surroundings clean and orderly. Requires current Basic Life Support or completion of the IU Health PCA program, knowledge of age-appropriate care, infection control, strong interpersonal/communication skills, ability to work under stress, multitask, exercise judgment, and familiarity with PCA/PCR/PCI procedures and related equipment/software. Must be capable of handling a high workload with attention to detail and basic math.
Required Qualifications
- Current Basic Life Support certification through the AHA or attainment at the completion of the IU Health PCA education program.
- Knowledge of care appropriate to the age and developmental level of the patients served.
- Requires up to date knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities.
- Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to withstand a high level of tension and stress and maintain concentration amidst interruptions and variable noise levels.
- Ability to exercise judgment and initiative in resolving problems.
- Ability to set priorities and manage a high workload within a limited time for completion.
- Knowledge of procedures, equipment, software and standards related to patient care activities that non-licensed role performs (e.g., PCA/PCR/PCI).
- Knowledge of infection control principles.
- Ability to perform physically demanding, repetitious movements.
- Ability to read and perform basic math.
