Job Summary
Patient Care Technician (PCA) in Adult Surgical Critical Care Unit at IU Health provides bedside care and supports the patient care team. Responsibilities include assisting with activities of daily living, mobility, meals, baths, and linen changes; obtain vital signs and report abnormalities to the RN or charge nurse; uphold patient safety using gait belts and alarms; maintain cleanliness and order of the patient environment. Requires current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or completion of the IU Health PCA program, with possible additional ACLS/other life-support certifications as required by unit. Seeks individuals with compassionate bedside manner, strong communication skills, ability to work in a fast-paced hospital setting, and the capacity to manage a high workload while prioritizing patient needs; role emphasizes collaboration with RNs and adherence to infection control standards.
Required Qualifications
- Requires current Basic Life Support certification through the AHA or attainment at the completion of the IU Health PCA education program
- Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty
- Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to maintain concentration amidst interruptions and variable noise levels
- Ability to read and perform basic math
- Ability to organize tasks and attend to details
- Knowledge of infection control principles
- Knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities for non-licensed role (PCA/PCR/PCI)
- Ability to work under high workload with prioritization
