Job Summary
The Patient Care Technician (PCA) works under the direction of the RN as a non-licensed team member in the Adult Coronary Critical Care Unit, providing care including activities of daily living, mobility assistance, continuous observation with suicide prevention, and maintaining a clean, orderly patient environment. Requires current BLS/AHA certification or completion of IU Health PCA program, knowledge appropriate to patient age/development, up-to-date care procedures, strong interpersonal/communication skills, ability to handle high stress, concentrate through interruptions and noise, exercise judgment and prioritize tasks, familiarity with PCA/PCR/PCI-related equipment and software, infection control principles, physical stamina for demanding tasks, and basic math, as well as adherence to hygiene/aseptic techniques.
Required Qualifications
- Current Basic Life Support certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or completion of IU Health PCA education program
- Non-licensed team member providing care to designated patients under RN direction
- Knowledge of care appropriate to the age and developmental level of patients served
- Up-to-date knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities
- Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to withstand high level of tension and stress
- Ability to maintain concentration amid interruptions and variable noise
- Ability to exercise judgment and initiative in problem resolution
- Ability to set priorities and manage a high workload within limited time
- Knowledge of procedures, equipment, software and standards related to PCA/PCR/PCI
- Knowledge of infection control principles
- Physical ability to perform physically demanding, repetitive movements
- Ability to read and perform basic math
- Ability to organize tasks and attend to details
- Knowledge of good personal hygiene and aseptic techniques to prevent infection of patients, self, and others
