Job Summary

Provide nursing care including blood pressure checks, vital signs monitoring, and assistance with bathing, meals, toileting, and ambulation. Transport patients, supplies, and equipment within the facility while documenting observations for licensed staff. Perform advanced technical skills such as phlebotomy, wound care dressings, and colostomy bag changes as competency allows. Maintain unit cleanliness, stock supplies, and operate office equipment. Support patient flow, answer phones, and participate in unit quality surveillance and shared governance activities.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent education
  • Previous experience in direct patient care preferred
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) if working in a critical access facility
  • AHA BLS-HCP certification within 6 months of hire
  • Effective interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills
  • Ability to attend required orientation classes during daytime hours, Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm for the first 2 weeks
  • Must successfully complete orientation and competency validation for position
  • Ability to lift, prolonged periods of standing, bending, pushing, pulling, reaching, and walking
  • Ability to perform responsibilities in a fast-paced environment, requiring use of prioritization and time management skills
  • Competency appropriate for phlebotomy
  • Competency appropriate for nonsterile wound care dressings
  • Competency appropriate for replacing and removing saline locks
  • Competency appropriate for colostomy bag changes
  • Ability to sit with patients on suicide precautions or confusion
  • Knowledge of the principles of growth and development through the life span
  • Ability to recognize and report data reflective of the patient's status
  • Ability to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age and specific needs
  • Ability to provide the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures
  • Ability to maintain patient, staff and customer confidentiality
  • Ability to interact with unit staff, patients, physicians, families, visitors, management, ancillary departments, and the general public
  • Ability to suggest cost containment initiatives in immediate work unit/department
  • Ability to detect errors in work
  • Ability to follow set guidelines and procedures in the execution of daily tasks
  • Ability to work at multiple Carilion facilities
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs
