Job Summary
Provide direct patient care under RN/LPN direction by lifting, turning, and positioning patients using Safe Patient Handling equipment. Perform hygiene, toileting, feeding, and range of motion exercises while assisting with transfers, ambulation, and surgical preps. Monitor vital signs, collect specimens, conduct EKGs, and administer enemas. Sit with confused patients requiring 1:1 observation and report condition changes promptly. Transport patients and equipment, maintain clean environments, and answer call bells. Work night shifts with weekend rotation, responding to emergencies and adhering to infection prevention standards. Maintain CPR certification and demonstrate cost-effective patient care through proper equipment use.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Current CPR certification
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Ability to assist with moving patients over 100 pounds using Safe Patient Handling equipment
- Ability to safely assist with patient mobility and activities of daily living
- Ability to recognize changes in patient condition and communicate concerns promptly
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team
- Ability to communicate using telephones, computer systems
- Ability to lift, turn, and positioning patients utilizing Safe Patient Handling equipment (> 35 pounds)
- Ability to administer cleansing enemas
- Ability to remove peripheral IV catheters
- Ability to apply external catheter or incontinence device
- Ability to perform and record temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, heights and weights
- Ability to perform and record I & O
- Ability to record bowel movements
- Ability to perform and record ADLs and activities
- Ability to obtain urine, stool, and sputum specimens
- Ability to complete EKGs
- Ability to conduct bladder scanning
- Ability to perform basic ostomy care
- Ability to transport blood products to and from the patient care area
- Ability to recognize emergency situations and initiate plan of action
- Ability to maintain neat and tidy environment
- Ability to inventory and assure disposition of patients' belongings
- Ability to assure proper storage of equipment
- Ability to answer call bells
- Ability to participate in patient rounding
- Ability to report any signs of abuse to the nursing staff
- Ability to recognize, troubleshoot and initiate corrective action needed on equipment
- Ability to comply with policies and procedures of the hospital/nursing department
- Ability to maintain CPR certification and practice
- Ability to demonstrate cost-effective patient care by demonstrating proper use and care of equipment
- Ability to participate in performance improvement activities
- Ability to communicate using telephones, computer systems
- Ability to answer telephone promptly and politely
- Ability to communicate with the patients, family, and members of the healthcare team in a concise, tactful and considerate manner
- Must adhere to all hospital policies, infection prevention standards, patient safety guidelines, and quality improvement initiatives
- Regular exposure to blood, body fluids, communicable diseases, and other healthcare-related hazards
