Job Summary

Process scheduled cases, reservations, and registrations for Emergency Department, Ambulatory Surgery, Clinic, and Inpatient patients by obtaining demographics, insurance information, and precertifications. Verify benefit eligibility via telephone, fax, and electronic tools, input subscriber data, and handle Worker's Compensation and No-fault cases. Translate diagnoses into ICD-9 or CPT codes to secure authorizations, assign beds based on priority and census, and coordinate room transfers with nursing staff. Document patient accounts, manage advanced directives, and process birth certificates or death records where applicable. Answer telephone inquiries, route calls, and collect patient signatures for treatment authorization and information release.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum formal education of High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 1 year job-related experience
  • Previous front-line medical office, billing, or hospital registration experience or skills
  • Knowledge Insurance verification process for HMO, MCR, MCD, BC, WC, NF, liability and traditional indemnity third party billing and payers
  • Must type minimum of 40 word per minute
  • Mature, accountable and punctual: reports to work promptly as schedule
  • Ability to prioritize and reprioritize as additional tasks develop or are assigned
  • Able to work well with a team and independently
  • Flexible and able to process and complete either Elective, Ambulatory Surg, Urgent Emergency patient admissions/registrations and performs all related duties as established in departmental policy and procedures
  • Ability to obtain and record patient demographics, contacts insurance information, notifications and precertification
  • Ability to verify benefit eligibility & Auth requirements, via Tel, fax, Web & Electronic Verification tools
  • Ability to obtain Verification, provide necessary insurance notification, obtain precertification and authorizations for Commercial, MCD, MCR, BC, HMO, Campus, MCDPCPs, MCRHMOs, No-fault, and Worker's Compensation
  • Ability to obtain patient signatures authorizing treatment, assignment of benefits release of information and acknowledging receipt of patient packages
  • Ability to appropriately, Schedule, Pre-Admits, or Admits patients as per established policy
  • Ability to Assign beds in accordance with established bed priority, uses bed tracking and census tools to expedite processing of decisions to admit
  • Ability to Assign patients to a hospital room and bed, based on sex, diagnosis, age, current patient census and in accordance with guidelines and priorities established in departmental policy and procedures
  • Ability to Obtain patient signatures authorizing treatment, assignment of benefits release of information and acknowledging receipt of patient packages
  • Ability to Prepare initial Medical Record Chart for encounter, identification bands and labels
  • Ability to Collects patient Discharge Notice Slips
  • Ability to Promptly enters discharges in computer system and ensures that vacant beds are accurately reflected in the computer system and patient bed board at all times
  • Ability to Coordinates and documents intra-hospital patient room transfers in collaboration with the Nursing Staff and in accordance with priorities established in departmental policy and procedure
  • Ability to Obtain patient signatures authorizing treatment, assignment of benefits release of information and acknowledging receipt of patient packages
  • Ability to Accurately & Timely processes Birth Worksheets, Birth Certificates and obtains signatures from MDs
  • Ability to Process requests for Newborn MCD and Social Security numbers
  • Ability to Conduct daily L&D and Maternity Unit walk throughs to interview patients
  • Ability to Review and accurately update or revise face sheets and patient information to ensure notifications, verifications and authorizations are secured
  • Ability to Timely Report changes to Patient information to Utilization Management, Medicaid Office and other Hospital Associates as necessary
  • Ability to Promptly Prepare Testing Requisitions affixing Labels as necessary
  • Ability to Place calls to BMP Director as necessary
