Job Summary

Schedule and reschedule patient appointments by phone or in person, including transferring patients to appropriate departments and updating necessary information. Provide individualized direct patient care under supervision, ensuring all required forms are completed accurately and gathering demographic and financial data. Perform vital signs screenings, obtain patient history, and prepare patients for exams while explaining procedures and answering questions. Collect co-pays, deductibles, and self-pay portions, and present insurance benefits clearly. Maintain compliance with Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing programs if assigned to occupational health clinics. Adapt communication styles to diverse patient populations and handle difficult situations with sound judgment.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association
  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information
  • Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process
  • Skills to effectively present information and respond to questions from patients and customers, with proficiency
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other departments
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in handling/escalating difficult situations
  • Must be able to lift 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally
  • Must be able to lift 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently
  • Must be able to lift greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly
  • Must be able to work in an area where patients enter
  • Must be able to work directly with patients
  • Must be able to work with specimens that could contain communicable diseases
  • Must be able to comply with all policies and standards
  • Must remain knowledgeable on current federal, state and local laws, accreditation standards or regulatory agency requirements that apply to the assigned area of responsibility
  • Must ensure compliance with all such laws, regulations and standards
  • Must be able to immediately report any known or suspected unethical or questionable behaviors or conduct
  • Must be able to report patient/employee safety concerns
  • Must be able to report patient privacy concerns
  • Must be able to report other compliance-related concerns
  • Must be able to meet the procedures of the Department of Transportation Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Programs, if working in an occupational health clinic

Desired Qualifications

  • Completion of a Medical Assistant training program
  • Related experience in a clinic or medical office setting
  • Certification in Healthcare Access Manager (CHAM)
  • Certification in Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA)
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant
  • Other medical specialty-based certification
