Job Summary

Patent Manager needed to support Lincoln Laboratory's Technology Transfer Office by evaluating technologies, guiding patent filing and prosecution with outside counsel, reviewing protection strategies for patented and pending technologies including software, and monitoring patent-related expenditures. Will collaborate with inventors, technology managers, licensing officers, and external counsel to oversee the patent portfolio, guide inventors during filing and prosecution, manage the patent docket to ensure timely deadlines, and oversee budgeted invoicing and reimbursement. The role requires deep knowledge of U.S. patent law, intellectual property procedures in research environments, and the ability to operate in a fast-paced, confidential setting while supporting technology transfer efforts from licenses to government use and open-source releases. U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain/maintain a security clearance are required.

Required Qualifications

  • A patent attorney (JD) or patent agent is required
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a biological science, physical science, or engineering with a broad technical knowledge base
  • An advanced degree in law, business, engineering, or science, preferred
  • 3-5 years experience in a technology transfer setting
  • A significant record of successful technology transfer in areas of physical science, engineering, software, and devices
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures relating to intellectual properties within a research university and/or federal lab setting
  • Advanced knowledge of U.S. patent, copyright, and contract law
  • Experience managing a patent portfolio
  • Experience reviewing patent invoices
  • Knowledge of current trends in university/industry technology transfer
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to effectively handle shifting priorities and adapt to changing demands in a fast paced dynamic environment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in open work environment
  • Excellent organizational skills and detail oriented
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently within an administrative office
  • U.S. citizenship
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
  • Experience/knowledge of Bayh-Dole Act
  • Reporting requirements for federally-funded inventions and patents
