Job Summary
Patent Attorney at Volvo Cars Global IP team to protect inventions across software and mechanical domains, collaborating with engineering groups to develop IP strategy, manage patent portfolios, and counsel on freedom-to-operate and licensing. Role involves drafting and prosecuting patent applications, identifying invention disclosures, advising on IP risks, supervising external counsel, and working with cross-functional teams (Engineering, Design, Procurement, and Legal) across Sweden, US, and China. Requires strong English proficiency, integrity, and the ability to translate IP law principles into business value; 3+ years of patent experience and a Master’s degree in a relevant technical field are preferred.
Required Qualifications
- Qualified European and/or national patent attorney (fully or partly qualified)
- Degree / Master of Science in a relevant technical field such as electronic engineering, engineering physics, applied physics, computer science, or ICT
- At least 3 years of patent experience at a law firm, patent office, or in-house IP department, with expertise in both software-implemented and mechanical inventions
- Knowledge of patent law and practice of major jurisdictions, including obtaining and defending patent rights and challenging third-party patent rights
- Excellent analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills; business-minded with a focus on delivering value
