Job Summary
Staff Engineer, Security Automation role anchored in a16z's security org. Build and centralize automation across tools (SIEM, vulnerability scanners, EDR, identity, asset management) and develop AI-native workflows and dashboards to scale the security team. Lead AI-enabled analysis, agentic automations, and AI-assisted summarization to increase leverage across Security Engineering and Incident Response, collaborating with IT and ASG. Role requires in-office presence 2 days/week in San Francisco, CA. Key duties include connecting security tooling into a unified picture, raising leverage with AI, and delivering production-quality tooling and dashboards across asset inventory, vulnerability posture, exposure reviews, and compliance evidence. Minimum qualifications include 5+ years in security engineering with automation, strong Python, hands-on AI/LLM experience, broad security fundamentals, understanding of AI security risks, ability to communicate with non-technical audiences, and a collaborative mindset.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of security engineering experience with automation and tool-building as a core part of work
- Proficiency in Python or similar production-quality security tooling
- Hands-on experience building with LLMs or AI APIs
- Broad security fundamentals across cloud security, detection engineering, identity, and vulnerability management
- Understanding of AI security risks (prompt injection, data exfiltration from LLM workflows, agent identity boundaries, model risk)
- Ability to translate technical security concepts and trade-offs into terms non-technical audiences across the firm
- Collaborative, low-ego, high-empathy approach to working across security, engineering, and IT
