Job Summary
Manage a high-volume elective oral surgery service from the Bristol/Gloucestershire site, delivering tooth removals, root extractions, and coronectomies under local or IV sedation. Coordinate with referring dental practitioners, the BSW ICB, and the wider specialist dental network while overseeing admissions, scrub nurses, and operating department practitioners. Maintain a broad caseload of NHS-referred patients across outpatient and minor surgical procedures, ensuring efficient and safe patient experiences. Participate in departmental meetings, bi-monthly clinical governance sessions, and contribute to audit, research, and service management. Requires GDC registration, Specialist or Associate Specialist status, and IV sedation accreditation or willingness to train.
Required Qualifications
- GDC registered
- Consultant in Oral Surgery
- Part-time availability (16 hours per week)
- Mondays and/or Fridays availability
- No out-of-hours on-call commitment
- Contracted to remove teeth, roots, impacted wisdom teeth and perform coronectomies
- Support of a radiology department who take OPGs and CBCTs
- Well-equipped theatre complex
- Admissions team
- Experienced oral surgery dental and scrub nurses
- Operating Department Practitioners
- IV sedation accreditation having delivered 20 supervised cases
- Willingness to train in IV sedation
- Participation in audit
- Participation in research
- Management of the service
- Engagement in specific management tasks
- Contribution to departmental meetings
- Participation in bi-monthly clinical governance meetings
- Agreement with the Medical Director
- Either on the Specialist List or held an Associate Specialist role
- Evidence of extensive experience
- Capability of delivering a variety of oral surgery procedures with LA
- Experience of IV sedation
- Certification to work independently in IV sedation
- Working towards certification to work independently in IV sedation
- Experience in requesting and interpreting small volume CBCTs
- Level two certificate in CBCT interpretation
