Job Summary
The UMOJA Adjunct Counselor is responsible for providing counseling services to support academic success and personal growth for African American and other students at Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District. Key responsibilities include teaching counseling courses, leading workshops and orientations, assisting with retention programs, and actively participating in campus and community engagements. Required qualifications include a Master's degree in a related field, experience in counseling, and proficiency in advising students. The role demands effective communication skills and a strong commitment to diversity and equity.
Required Qualifications
- Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent
- Experience in educational, career, and personal counseling
- Experience advising students about certificates, associate degrees, and transfer requirements
- Training and experience in personal and crisis counseling
- Ability to use technology in counseling services
- Experience teaching career planning and personal development courses
- Effective communication skills
- Sensitivity to diverse backgrounds of community college students
Desired Qualifications
- Understanding of socio-economic, cultural, environmental, and personal factors affecting student success
- Experience with campus programs such as student-athletes
- Experience developing and maintaining professional relationships with community agencies
- Active participation in community and professional organizations
- Knowledge of current theories and best practices in student success
