Job Summary
Conduct comprehensive pre-employment background investigations for police officer and civilian applicants, including interviews, reference checks, and criminal history reviews. Coordinate and maintain employee training records, track compliance with MCOLES requirements, and prepare reports on training status. Perform video and audio redaction of body-worn camera recordings and assist with processing Freedom of Information Act requests involving digital evidence. Maintain confidential personnel files, background investigation files, and departmental databases while ensuring compliance with FBI CJIS Security Policy and Michigan LEIN requirements. Assist with scheduling department training, preparing statistical reports, and managing administrative paperwork for hiring, onboarding, and promotions. Respond to inquiries from department personnel and the public while exercising law enforcement authority as a sworn HCMA police officer.
Required Qualifications
- Must possess and maintain, or be eligible to obtain and maintain, licensure as a law enforcement officer through the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES), as required for appointment.
- Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation.
- Must maintain strict confidentiality and comply with all applicable federal, state, and departmental regulations governing the handling, storage, security, and release of protected information.
Desired Qualifications
- Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Business Administration, Office Administration, or a related field preferred.
- Relevant work experience may be substituted for education.
- Prior law enforcement experience as a sworn police officer preferred.
- Experience performing administrative, investigative, training, records, or other specialized law enforcement support functions is desirable.
- Experience conducting background investigations or working with confidential records is preferred.
- Experience working with digital evidence, video management systems, records management software, or law enforcement technology platforms is desirable.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams.
- Ability to learn and effectively utilize law enforcement software applications, records management systems, digital evidence platforms, and department-specific technology systems.
- Ability to prepare detailed written reports, correspondence, and administrative documentation while maintaining accurate records.
- Ability to organize multiple projects, establish priorities, meet deadlines, and complete assignments with minimal supervision.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality while handling sensitive personnel information, investigative records, criminal justice information, and other protected information.
