Job Summary
Collect blood specimens using venipuncture, skin puncture, and heel sticks, while gathering non-blood samples like urine and sputum. Verify requisition details before collection, assemble necessary equipment, and confirm patient identity to alleviate procedure anxiety. Perform venipuncture by applying tourniquets, locating veins, and drawing blood into collection tubes, then label and store containers. Accession and process specimens for testing, record daily volumes, and answer general questions about test orders. May perform waived or moderately complex testing, run quality control reports, and assist in training interns or new employees. Maintain a clean work area, restock supplies, and handle receptionist duties including greeting patients and reviewing request sheets. Adhere to all laboratory policies, PPE requirements, and safety procedures for biohazards and sharps.
Required Qualifications
- High School / GED
- Graduation from a Phlebotomy technical training program
- Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) certification
- 1+ years of phlebotomy experience
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Knowledge of medical terminology obtained through previous medical practice experience (up to 1 year)
- Proficiency in the use of Lab Information Systems (LIS) and Electronic Medical Records (EMR)
- Proven ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Proven solid interpersonal skills and customer service orientation
