Job Summary
Respond to fire and emergency calls, providing BLS/ALS and first aid treatment while performing firefighting duties. Operate radios, drive apparatus, and conduct equipment checks and repairs. Write incident reports, present fire prevention activities, and inspect structures for code compliance. Assist in training, drills, and special assignments including hazardous materials and technical rescue. May fill in for uncovered shifts and perform administrative tasks as assigned. Part-time schedule includes 12 or 24-hour shifts on an as-needed basis.
Required Qualifications
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Have a high school diploma or GED
- Must possess a valid Wisconsin State driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record
- Be legally eligible to be employed in the United States
- Meet insurability requirements of the City's insurance carrier
- Must be able to read, write and speak in the English language
- Wisconsin State Certified Firefighter I
- EMS License at or above Advanced-EMT (Wisconsin)
- Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 200 pounds with assistance
- Wearing personal protective equipment including a self-contained breathing apparatus while performing firefighting duties

- EMS License at or above Paramedic (Wisconsin)
- Wisconsin State Certified Officer
- Wisconsin Driver Operator/Aerial Certification
- Wisconsin State Fire Instructor
- Wisconsin State Fire Inspector
- Wisconsin State Certified Firefighter II
- Wisconsin Driver Operator/Pumper Certification
- Working knowledge of: Fire suppression and prevention principles
- Working knowledge of: Emergency medical and rescue techniques and their applications
- Working knowledge of: Computers and basic software programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.)
- Working knowledge of: Current firefighting, hazmat, and rescue techniques and methods
- Working knowledge of: Driver safety, laws, ordinances, department guidelines, and the City of Burlington geography (streets, alleys, buildings, hydrants, etc.)
- Working knowledge of: Safety rules, regulations, procedures, and practices as outlined in the department directives
- Ability to: Apply standard firefighting and emergency medical techniques
- Ability to: Follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to: Handle the arduous physical requirements of the job under stressful and adverse conditions
- Ability to: Work effectively and timely to analyze and resolve issues
- Ability to: Take effective decisive action under stressful and adverse conditions
- Ability to: Effectively communicate in both written and verbal format
- Ability to: Operate a variety of tools, equipment, and machinery used in the department
- Ability to: Develop and maintain cooperative and professional relationships with employees, managers, and representatives from other departments and organizations
