Job Summary
Conduct emergency medical response, rescue/recovery operations, fire mitigation, and health and safety inspections at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Operate rescue equipment, ventilation systems, communications tools, and mobile machinery while performing life safety inspections and managing hazardous materials. Assist the ERT Supervisor with training implementation, documentation, and the development of job hazard analyses and standard operating procedures. Monitor air and gas levels, stage materials, and coordinate transport to ensure conformance with safety regulations. Participate in monthly training programs and respond to emergency situations in underground and surface environments.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- National Registry or South Dakota EMR, EMT, AEMT or Paramedic certification
- Rope Rescue Technician certification
- MSHA Metal/Non-Metal Mine Rescue certification
- ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800 certification
- Confined Space Rescue certification
- OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) or US EPA hazardous material (Hazmat) training
- OSHA 30-hour Construction Course certification
- CPR/AED Instructor certification
- Experience working in mining industry or related field
- Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination and Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE)
- Ability to work in both surface and underground environments at depths up to 5000 feet
- Ability to work in confined spaces
- Ability to work in extreme conditions and varying temperatures
- Ability to work in wet or muddy conditions
- Capability to perform physically demanding tasks including prolonged standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, squatting, and crawling
- Ability to bend, twist, and work in awkward positions
- Must regularly lift, push, and pull materials weighing up to 125 pounds
- Ability to hear warning signals, auditory signals or team communications in noisy environments
- Specific vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
- Dexterity to handle and operate hand and power tools, machinery, and equipment
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods
- Ability to maintain facial hair requirements within the Respiratory Protection Standard while on duty
- Ability to follow instructions, procedures and safety protocols
- Ability to recognize and stop work in conditions that present immediate danger
- Flexibility to adjust to rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and emergency callouts
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Desired Qualifications
- Experience in Fire, Rescue and/or EMS operations
- Experience in facilities and physical security
- Experience in mine rescue operations
- Knowledge of OSHA and MSHA standards as well as environmental, safety and health policies
- Experience in use of computer-based tools such as Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
- Prior military service
