Job Summary

Oversee assigned laboratories involving live animals, ensuring compliance with USDA, IACUC, and AVMA protocols while supervising anesthesia, surgical procedures, and post-operative care. Perform spay/neuters, vaccinations, and porcine procedures including catheterization and intubation, while maintaining accurate records of treatments and controlled substances. Serve as the Clinical Proficiency Exam (CPE) Site Coordinator, planning logistics, recruiting examiners, and coordinating all aspects of examination administration. Collaborate with instructors and technicians to enhance educational delivery and contribute to staff training on animal health policies. Ensure regulatory compliance through audits and reporting, while advising on medical equipment and department program development.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) degree from an AVMA-accredited institution
  • Active veterinary license in Tennessee
  • Minimum 5 years of clinical veterinary experience
  • Strong knowledge of anesthesia, surgery, perioperative care, and clinical diagnostics
  • Demonstrated understanding of USDA, DEA, IACUC, and AVMA compliance requirements
  • Ability to obtain a DEA license
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to support occasional evening/weekend educational events as required
  • Ability to work with licensed veterinary technicians and veterinary assistants to ensure optimum animal care
  • Travel as part of this position may be required with advanced notice
  • Demonstrated ability to perform and supervise veterinary procedures with professionalism, precision, and care
  • Ability to perform spay and neuters on dogs and cats as well as wound care
  • Ability to work with porcine
  • High level of proficiency with clinical documentation, case records, and compliance reporting
  • Strong working knowledge of medical and surgical equipment, anesthesia management, and tissue handling
  • Effective verbal communication skills: able to explain complex clinical topics in a clear and accessible manner
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to mentor, coach, and collaborate across interdisciplinary teams
  • Ability to manage multiple programs simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail and adherence to compliance standards
  • High degree of professionalism, integrity, and discretion when handling sensitive information and controlled substances
  • Strong judgment, decision-making, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities
  • Ability to sit, use hands and fingers, talk or hear, and smell continually
  • Ability to stand, walk, and reach frequently
  • Ability to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch occasionally
  • Ability to frequently lift and carry up to 10 lbs
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 50 lbs
  • Close vision required to see computer monitors, read documents, and operate copy and fax machines
  • Distance vision is required to drive an automobile if driving is a requirement of the job
