Job Summary
Provide general instructional and teaching assistance to assigned teacher(s) by reinforcing skills, administering make-up tests, and assisting with academic instruction and classroom activities. Prepare and disseminate materials, set up charts and audio-visual equipment, and distribute textbooks appropriately. Monitor students during classroom activities, playground supervision, cafeteria time, and transitions to or from buses, while enforcing classroom management plans. Perform clerical tasks including typing, data entry, filing records, collecting fees, and operating office equipment like copiers and calculators. Assist students on and off the Special Needs Bus and support field trip arrangements. Work 8-hour days in a classroom or office environment, lifting up to 100 pounds as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Associate Degree, 60 college credit hours, or must have passed the ParaPro Exam with a high school diploma
- A good knowledge of and understanding of child growth and development
- Knowledge of proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation
- Working knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, and operations
- General knowledge of modern office equipment such as copiers, and calculators
- Knowledge of clerical functions such as typing, filing and sorting
- Knowledge in the application of classroom instruction and teaching
- Has knowledge of modern office practices and technology
- Has skill in the use of computers for word and data processing and records management
- Has comprehensive knowledge of the terminology and various professional languages used within the department
- Knows how to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals and members of the public through contact and cooperation
- Knows how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations
- Skill in the use of general office equipment such as calculators, computers, copiers, etc
- Good written and verbal communication, organization, basic mathematical, and telephone skills
- Ability to interact with co-workers, students and school staff in a courteous and professional manner
- Ability to provide assistance to teachers in classroom situations
- Physical demands are restricted to office work requiring the lifting/moving of items weighing up to 25 pounds
- The employee must lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and frequently lift and/or move 25 lbs
- Environmental factors: Assist in toileting, including diapering; feeding or oral facilitation; assist with personal hygiene for some students; venting gastrointestinal tube, suctioning (training provided); lifting and positioning disabled students
