Job Summary
Paraprofessional Educator within the Special Programs Early Childhood and Elementary team provides instructional support to students with disabilities under a special education teacher’s direction, primarily in special education classrooms, with potential support in other settings. Responsibilities include preparing/modifying instructional materials and assistive technology, collecting data aligned to IEP goals, collaborating with staff, delivering intimate student supports per IEPs, assisting with daily routines, feeding/dressing/health-related care as needed, positioning and transfers, supervising students during field trips, lunch, and buses, and implementing ASD-approved de-escalation techniques. The role requires strong literacy, communication, confidentiality, teamwork, and the ability to follow teacher-directed programming, with physical demands including standing, walking, and occasional lifting up to 40-50 lbs. Employment is full-time with Anchorage School District, located at Mountain View Elementary in Anchorage, Alaska, with compensation hourly ($20.94-$21.83) plus a supplemental $1.00/hour not to exceed 8 hours/day, and retirement through PERS.
Required Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent, or current enrollment in a GED program
- Must meet paraprofessional requirements for the state of Alaska through one of: 48 college credits, or passing ETS Paraprofessional Assessment (459+), or passing ACT WorkKeys, or ASD Master Teacher paraprofessional training
- Basic literacy in reading, writing, and math
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional relationships with staff, parents, students, administrators, and the public
- Ability to read and interpret IEPs, behavior plans, and lesson plans when directed by a special education teacher
- One year of experience in general education, special education, agency settings, or private school settings (preferred)
- Knowledge of first aid (preferred)
- Ability to train in instructional strategies and technology and implement training
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (for Life Skills/Structured Learning classrooms)
- Valid Alaska driver’s license and ASD vehicle insurance (willingness to use personal vehicle for department business)

- Background check clearance for ASD employment
- Possession of valid Alaska driver’s license as required
- Ability to work in Anchorage School District facilities, possibly on military installations (JBER)
