Job Summary
Administer advanced life support care to sick and injured persons in a pre-hospital setting per statewide Treatment Protocols and HEMSI Medical Control Physicians. Assess illness or injury to prioritize procedures, restore heart rhythm, monitor cardiac patients, and perform endotracheal intubation. Initiate intravenous fluids, administer medications and injections, and take vital signs at emergency scenes. Extricate trapped victims, transport patients to treatment centers, and drive the ambulance. Communicate with hospital staff and physicians via radio or telephone, observe patient reactions to treatments, and prepare required reports. Requisition supplies, maintain emergency vehicle records, and coordinate additional personnel including volunteer responders. Maintain current knowledge of treatment techniques and protocol changes.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- required undergraduate National Registered Paramedic (NRP) certificate
- State of Alabama EMSP License as Paramedic
- Valid and current driver's license
- Healthcare Provider CPR Certification upon hire or obtained within provisional period
- Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) training (once employed/promoted must obtain and maintain)
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization
- Ability to legibly write routine reports and correspondence
