Job Summary
Para-Educator supports instruction under a certificated teacher in a special education setting, assisting with IEP goals, health and daily care of students, behavior management, clerical duties, and setting up engaging learning environments. Specialized duties include Deaf and Hard of Hearing support with ASL/PSE/MCE (where assigned) and Visual Impairment support with Braille and related equipment. Works in Pre-K through Young Adult programs across SDC settings; participates in data collection, testing, attendance, and collaboration with teachers, staff, and families. Requires 0.8 FTE, 202 days per year, and 7.5 hours per day; eligibility prerequisites include a high school diploma or equivalent plus additional qualifications (AA or higher, or 48 college units, or CBEST-based pathway); valid First Aid and CPR; willingness to obtain required training as needed. Office and classroom environments with lifting capability and health/safety responsibilities are part of the role. Location: Oakland, California.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Associate of Arts degree or higher OR 48+ college units OR CBEST/ParaPro/CODESP passing score with related training in child growth and development or instructional technology
- One year of experience working with children in a classroom setting and experience attending to students with physical needs preferred
