Job Summary
Assist instructional personnel with the presentation of learning materials and conduct instructional exercises for individual students and small groups. Tutor students to reinforce learning activities, monitor drill and practice sessions, and direct learners into safe environments. Manage student behavior using positive strategies, prepare instructional materials, and maintain confidential records and files. Administer and score criterion-referenced aptitude tests, operate educational media equipment, and facilitate vocational lab projects. Provide support for English language learners and coordinate transportation for field trips and internship sites. Communicate orally with students and parents in Spanish as needed, relay information to teachers, and respond spontaneously to visitor inquiries.
Required Qualifications
- Be at least eighteen years of age
- Hold a high school diploma or its equivalent
- Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university
- Have earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher at an accredited college or university
- Completed an apprenticeship as a paraeducator, in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council
- Received a passing score on one of the PESB approved assessments
- Hold an AA or higher degree from a college or university
- Have completed at least two years college with 72 college credits accrued
- Have passed the OSPI approved test
- First Aid, CPR and AED certification
- Completion of all state required paraeducator certifications
- Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint clearance
- I-9 employment eligibility in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act
- HIV/HBV training
- Human Resources new hire training
- Knowledge of basic concepts of child growth, development, and developmental behavior characteristics pertaining to students in grades pre-school through age 21 including students with special learning needs and English language needs
- Knowledge of student behavior management strategies and techniques
- Knowledge of appropriate English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar
- Knowledge of basic arithmetical concepts
- Knowledge of routine record management, storage, and retrieval systems and procedure
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form in English
- Ability to demonstrate an empathetic, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age, ability and cultural backgrounds
- Ability to perform routine clerical tasks and operate a variety of educational and office related machines and equipment
- Ability to learn to utilize a variety of appropriate instructional materials and procedures in the enhancement of a positive educational environment
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children and adults
- Ability to follow specific student educational plans
- Ability to manage and guide student behavior
- Ability to use a personal computer for extended periods of time

- Must be able to successfully accomplish position responsibilities in English and Spanish
- Must be able to communicate with students in Spanish in various settings in order to respond to questions, resolve minor conflicts or establish relationships
- Must be able to relay information in Spanish to parents from the classroom teacher via the phone or in person
- Must be able to respond to phone calls from Spanish speaking persons in the office or respond in person to Spanish speaking visitors in the office
- Must be able to administer and score a variety of criterion referenced and general aptitude tests

- Must be able to maintain regular punctual attendance
- Must be able to adhere to federal and state laws and district regulations, policies, procedures and practices
- Must be able to observe strict confidentiality regarding student information
- Must be able to attend off site trainings and workshops as deemed necessary
Desired Qualifications
- Training or knowledge of cultural differences
- Demonstrated bi-literate competencies in oral and written English and Spanish
- Preferred written and oral proficiency in Spanish
- Training or coursework in child growth and development, instructional technology, or a closely related field
