Job Summary

Parachute Modeling Engineer develops and maintains state-of-the-art multi-body parachute system models and integrates them into NASA flight mechanics simulations (Julia-based or Trick-based in C++), validates parachute deployment/inflation/full-open models, and collaborates with parachute analysis experts to reconstruct drop test data and assess performance. Responsibilities include running simulations on HPC systems, writing requirements documentation, and presenting verification/validation results in technical reviews. Requirements include a bachelor's degree in engineering, 2–5 years of experience, 6-DOF/multi-body flight mechanics experience, software development experience, parachute/flight mechanics model experience, spacecraft performance analysis, Git/GitLab usage, strong communication, and ability to work in NASA contractor/ civil-servant teams; proficiency with Microsoft Office and willingness to operate within a safety-critical, analytically demanding environment. Preferences include advanced degrees (ABET-accredited), expertise in Julia/C++, Linux, HPC simulations, and experience with design reviews and NASA programs.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited institution
  • minimum of 2–5 years of experience in the field or a related area
  • Experience with 6-DOF and multi-body flight mechanics simulations
  • Experience with software development in any programming language
  • Experience developing, verifying, and validating parachute or other flight mechanics simulation models
  • Experience analyzing spacecraft performance
  • Experience with source code management tools such as Git or GitLab
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to coordinate across multiple technical disciplines
  • Ability to work in a team environment consisting of NASA civil servants and contractor employees
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines and schedules with limited supervision
  • Ability to prepare written documents and present findings at technical meetings and reviews
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products
