Job Summary
Assist the classroom teacher in implementing educational programs for students with disabilities, including providing instruction, behavior management, and preparation of materials; perform life-skills support (lifting, toileting, feeding) and may work at elementary or secondary levels. Responsibilities include assisting with IEPs, behavior management techniques, vocational instruction and placement, conducting instruction in large groups, small groups, or one-to-one, and performing personal-care tasks under trained supervision. May prepare intervention materials, administer or assist with medical or clinical procedures under licensed nursing staff, maintain student records and files, supervise students during meals, recess, bus, and field trips, and use a computer for data entry and reports. Requires ability to lift up to 50 pounds, adapt to varied conditions, and adhere to FERPA/HIPAA requirements. Certifications in First Aid and CPR; background checks are required. Desirable qualifications include college credits in related fields and prior special education paraeducator experience.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or its recognized equivalent (GED)
- Associate degree or higher OR 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at 100 level or higher OR completion of an apprenticeship as a paraeducator
- Two (2) years of successful work experience with special education students
- ETs ParaPro or equivalent test requirements (passing scores)
- Fingerprinting and Background check; First Aid and CPR; completion of PESB fundamentals training; JBLM access requirements (for JBLM positions)
