Job Summary

Prepare surfaces for painting using power cleaning, sanding, and scraping; apply paints, stains, sealers, and varnishes to interior and exterior building surfaces. Erect and work from scaffolding and ladders while adhering to safety precautions. Mix and match paints and stains using proper pigments, bases, and thinners. Patch plaster and sheetrock, repair drywall, and perform minor carpenter work. Clean and maintain tools, manage inventory of materials and equipment, and submit quarterly reports. Operate automotive equipment such as tractors and bobcats. Requires high school graduation, one to two years of painting or maintenance experience, a valid North Carolina driver's license, and the ability to exert significant physical force and climb ladders.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school
  • 1 to 2 years of experience in painting or building maintenance
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the state of North Carolina
  • Must maintain a safe driving record
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including power cleaning equipment, scrapers, sanding machines, paint brushes, rollers, etc.
  • Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle (i.e., tractors, bobcats)
  • Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects
  • Requires the ability to climb and maneuver on ladders, scaffolding, and/or in tight spaces
  • Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things
  • Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information
  • Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions to assistants or subordinates
  • Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, work orders, etc.
  • Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, logs, timesheets, etc.
  • Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control and confidence
  • Requires the ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists

  • Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination
  • Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color
  • Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions
  • Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress
  • Requires the ability to talk and hear
  • Must be able to communicate via telephone
  • Must have general knowledge of all department operating procedures to include but not limited to the work order procedures, credit card procedures, International Standard Organization (ISO) procedures, and other departmental procedures developed and implemented
  • Responsible for having a general working knowledge of the departments work order system and the document flow associated with that system
  • Ability to prepare surfaces for application of paint
  • Ability to match paints
  • Ability to use and care for a variety of hand and power tools necessary to perform painting work
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time as required by work assignments
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments
  • Ability to conduct small carpenter work
  • Must be physically able to erect scaffolds and ladders
  • Must be able to mix and matching paints and stains by using proper pigments, base and thinner
  • Must be able to match paints and stains by use of charts and color chips
  • Must be able to patch plaster and sheetrock by using fillers, tape, spackling compound, patching plasters or any other products that become the state of the art
  • Must be able to repair drywall and make alterations to walls
  • Must be able to clean and maintain equipment, tools and supplies
  • Must be able to request, maintain and be responsible for the inventory and accountability of material, tools, repair parts and equipment assigned and that is issued for use
  • Must be able to inventory all tools and equipment quarterly and submit results via the appropriate supervisor(s) to the Director for consideration
  • Must be able to ensure assigned automotive equipment is operated and maintained as outlined in applicable district's procedures
