Job Summary
Painter II responsible for surface preparation and marine coating application on ships and boats for the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, Military Sealift Command (MSC), and commercial vessels. Perform sandblasting, grinding, sanding, and cleaning to prepare surfaces and apply primers and marine coatings (epoxy, polyurethane, anti-fouling, fire-retardant) via spray, roller, or brush. Inspect work to meet shipyard specifications and document progress, environmental readings, and quality issues. Adhere to safety protocols (PPE, respirators, ventilation, confined space procedures, LOTO, WAF, Hot Work) and be cross-trained as a Competent Person and Fire Watch. Maintain paint equipment and work areas, and be capable of operating aerial lifts. Requires ability to read shipyard specifications/blueprints/SDS/PDS, knowledge of safety procedures, and 2 years of relevant painting experience; SSPC certifications and training on C-7 and/or C-12 are preferred. Flexible to work non-standard hours and perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- 2 Years of marine, shipyard, or industrial manufacturing paint experience
- Journeyman, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Society of Protective Coatings (SSPC) certifications and trained on Abrasive Blaster (C-7) and/or Spray Application (C-12)
- Ability to read and interpret shipyard specifications, blueprints, SDS, and PDS
- Knowledge of shipyard safety procedures, confined space protocols, and hazardous material handling
