Job Summary
Perform full-cycle surface prep, priming, painting, and refinishing on heavy-duty construction equipment including dump trucks, dozers, excavators, wheel loaders, articulated haulers, cranes, and similar off-highway assets. Sandblast, sand, mask, prime, and prep frames, cabs, booms, buckets, panels, and components for paint application. Mix industrial coatings to manufacturer specifications and color-match OEM finishes for Caterpillar, John Deere, Komatsu, Volvo, Case, and others. Operate HVLP spray guns, pressure pots, and paint booth equipment to apply primer, single-stage, base coat, and clear coat systems including epoxies, urethanes, and industrial enamels. Own the quality of finished work end-to-end by buffing, polishing, and detailing to a standard that holds up in the field. Serve as a technical resource for junior painters and body techs, providing guidance on prep, mixing, application, and finish correction. Perform final inspection on paint work and sign off on customer-ready units. Maintain spray equipment, paint booth, mixing room, and PPE inventory in clean, code-compliant working order. Follow and enforce all OSHA, EPA, and shop safety protocols for handling solvents, isocyanates, and respiratory PPE. Communicate directly with management and customers regarding additional found damage, scope changes, timeline impacts, and best refinish solutions on high-spec jobs. Compile inspection reports, document repairs, and report all findings to management. Respond promptly to client queries, interacting with customers in person or via phone. Work M-F with some Saturdays as needed at a locally run, family-oriented fleet maintenance network.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years painting and refinishing heavy-duty construction equipment, off-highway equipment, or medium/heavy duty trucks
- Expert-level proficiency with HVLP spray equipment, paint booth operation and prep equipment (sandblasters, DA sanders, etc.)
- Strong color matching skills and deep experience with two-part urethanes, epoxies and industrial coating systems
- Ability to plan and execute complex multi-stage paint jobs with minimal supervision
- Follow oral and written instructions to complete daily tasks
- Basic reading and writing skills to complete customer repair orders
- Basic computer skills to submit repairs for billing
- Ability to work in a team environment while following shop safety procedures
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. without assistance and up to 100 lbs. with assistance
- Provide own tools
Desired Qualifications
- PPG, Sherwin-Williams, Axalta or comparable manufacturer paint certification
- I-CAR or ASE refinish certification
- Experience with OEM color matching for major construction equipment brands (Caterpillar, John Deere, Komatsu, Volvo)
- Experience with sandblasting, media blasting and powder coating
- Experience mentoring or leading junior painters
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Class A or Class B CDL
